Campaign for Plan for the People
Working for a flexible, implementable General Plan
Campaign for Plan for the People (CfPftP) is a broad-based community organization comprising agriculture and hospitality leaders, community advocates and affordable housing and labor groups. It works with the Refinement Group in urging Monterey County to adopt a General Plan that is flexible and implementable, that will provide housing and job opportunities while sustaining the economy and preserving the area's beautiful resources.
CfPftP's recent research shows that more than 75 percent of likely voters want carefully managed growth but that new housing, particularly affordable housing, should allow for move-up opportunities and the accumulation of equity (not permanent affordability).
County voters also trust that farmers and ranchers are good stewards of the land and that local workers need housing close to their jobs. Putting planning in the hands of "inflexible enviros" - only 23 percent of the polling sample - does not produce an implementable plan, say voters when provided information on the issues. The research also indicates that many voters "move over" when becoming informed about issues that concern them.
Consequently, CfPftP has embarked on an effort to provide information to political leaders, community decision-makers, civic groups, labor organization and property owners groups.
CfPftP seeks your participation and help in discussing issues with your neighbors, writing letters to the editor and providing financial support.
Letters to the Editor should be no longer than 200 words, cut and pasted into e-mail space:
